Red Sauce

Notes —The type of meat sauce that’s good on spaghetti. Takes almost 2 hours to simmer, so plan ahead. (unknown kcal/recipe).

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs 90% lean ground beef
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 med onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 dried basil
  • 1 tsp italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ground pepper
  • 1 6oz can tomato paste
  • 2 16oz cans tomato sauce
  • 1 28oz can diced tomatoes (or fresh diced tomatoes)
  • 8 oz fresh mushrooms
  • parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef, strain out the meat when done.
  2. In the leftover liquid, sauté onion.
  3. Add garlic, bay leaves, oregano, basil, italian seasoning, salt and pepper.
  4. Stir until garlic is cooked.
  5. Add tomato paste, tomato sauce and diced tomatoes.
  6. Stir well and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  7. Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
  8. Top with sauteed mushroom or just stir them in.
